Deep Creek Lake, Maryland
A Vacation Home for The Corsetto Family

Project Description:

Craig and Sharyl Corsetto enjoy the lifestyle offered by Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County, Maryland. They decided to build a vacation home overlooking the lake which will become their permanent residence after retirement. After interviewing several designers and architects, they chose Caddworks. Craig and Sharyl said Caddworks listened to their ideas, had experience with similar projects, could offer both traditional CAD drafting and 3D design modeling, plus had a competitive price for their services.

The site is situated on a hillside with a steep slope from front to back. Views of the lake and surrounding mountains are to the rear which is also the southern orientation. Shading during the summer and taking advantage of solar heating in the winter were important design considerations.

The home envisioned would be modest in size, only 2500 to 2800 square feet, with an open floor plan. Tall walls, high glass, and vaulted ceilings would be utilized to make the home “live bigger”. The exterior would have contemporary lines with angled walls to capture views, a low pitched roof with generous overhangs for shade, and a blend of Hardiplank siding and synthetic stone veneer. The interior would have the primary spaces all on the first floor. One large main space would be divided into a kitchen, dining, and living area. A central fireplace and changes in ceiling heights would help define the various areas. The main stairs, owner’s bedroom suite, a small office, powder room, and mudroom would also be on the first floor. Connecting halls and door openings would be wider than standard for easier access. The upstairs would have two bedrooms and shared bath for visiting family and friends plus a loft for enjoying quiet times. A finished lower level would have a recreation room for entertaining plus a separate craft room for Sharyl and shop area for Craig.

The design evolved with the garage and foyer on the front (north) with minimal exterior openings. This would minimize grade for the driveway and entry sidewalk plus protect the remainder of the home from cold northwest winds during winter. The focal element would be the covered porch with its open timber frame construction. The living, dining, and owner’s bedroom would be strategically placed across the back for views and privacy. A large deck off the living area would provide opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. It would also have stairs to the patio on the lower level. A smaller deck with hot tub would be located off the owner’s bedroom.

Construction began in the spring of 2009 and should be complete by the end of October. Only some minor changes have occurred during construction. One change was to open the main stair to the living area even more than originally designed. This change was accomplished smoothly between the client, Caddworks, the structural engineer, and contractor. Otherwise, the home is coming to reality and the next step for Craig and Sharyl is to plan their move-in party!
